Connection Process
Whether you’re making the move to natural gas for your new home or an existing home, we are here to help make the connection process easy.
Following the Essential Services Commission’s (ESC) review of the Gas Distribution Code of Practice, all new Victorian Gas Connections will incur a charge from the 1st January 2025. Connection charges will be published on our website by 1 January 2025, in compliance with the code. Final charges to customers may differ by retailer. Impacted customers should contact retailers to confirm final connection charges.
Choose a gas retailer
Your gas energy retailer provides gas to your home and sends the bills for your usage. Tell them you want gas in your home, and they’ll arrange with us to get you connected. Advise them which gas appliances you plan to install so we can install the correct service connection.
1. Your gas retailer will lodge a request with us to lay a gas service - the connection from the gas mains in your street to the meter on your property.
2. While building your home, keep in mind a suitable location for the gas meter - which can be confirmed during a visit from a MGN representative.
3. Once the retailer has spoken with us, we can provide an indication of timings and if there is any installation cost.
Choose your meter position
Your gas retailer will arrange for a Multinet representative to visit the site to discuss with you or the builder your requirements and confirm a suitable, safe location for the meter.
When the site is ready a service line installer will attend to lay a gas service line. Our builders pack explains how to ready the site, typical meter locations and required clearances.
Appliance installation and connection
After confirming the meter location, contact your licensed gasfitter to install your chosen gas appliances and the gas pipes from the appliances to the meter location.
Gas meter install
Once the appliances are ready, speak to your gas retailer who will coordinate with us to install, test and commission the gas meter and commence natural gas supply.
Enjoy your gas
Speak to your energy retailer
1. Advise if there’s any cost to connect.
2. Advise the gas pressure available (this is important as some appliances will only run on certain pressure types)
3. Timings for when the install of a service line - the connection from the gas mains in your street to the meter on your property – will be complete.
